Italy--Summary

The food in the city of Venice is the least of Italy: A Journey of Scenery, Stories - and Flavours

From the first bite of chocolate gelato to the last taste of Italian pasta, this journey through Italy was a feast for the senses - especially for anyone with a love of culture, cuisine and centuries-old beauty.

We have just completed our 9-day journey through Italy. Here's a reflection on the experience, divided into daily life (clothes, food, accommodation, transport), people and places, and the feeling of travelling with friends.

From Munich Milan

From Rome to Munich

1. Clothing, food, accommodation and transport

Clothing: Compared to Munich, the temperature in Italy was noticeably warmer - about 8 to 9 degrees higher on average. With plenty of sunshine, short sleeves were perfect during the day and only a light jacket was needed in the early mornings and evenings.

Food: Personally, I found Italian food to be less varied and flavourful than Chinese food. However, Florence and Rome stood out as cities worth exploring for food lovers, with many well-rated restaurants that made dining there a highlight.

Accommodation: The hotel in Florence had older decor and the hairdryer was frustrating to use - this stay wasn't particularly enjoyable. Other accommodation was generally better. In Rome we stayed in a guesthouse. One of our friends was quite upset about the lack of proper check-in at the front desk, which caused some tension.

Transport: Florence was the easiest city to get around in - compact and walkable. Train delays were common and the experience could be confusing. We encountered sudden platform changes and even waited for over an hour due to a major delay. Italian trains can feel a bit abstract at times - what is scheduled may not always go as planned - so flexibility and patience are definitely required.

2. People and places

We didn't have any particularly strong impressions of the Italian people - most interactions were neutral. However, we were reminded to be careful as pickpocketing is common in Italy and public safety isn't as good as in Munich.

In terms of attractions, all cities except Milan were full of incredible sights well worth visiting - Venice's canals, Florence's art, Rome's ruins and Pisa's iconic Leaning Tower offered unforgettable experiences steeped in history.

3. Reflections on travelling together

Overall, the trip was quite enjoyable. Although there were a few unpleasant moments, especially in Rome, they didn't overshadow the joy of exploring the sights and enjoying the journey.

Although pickpockets are a real concern and the food may not be up to the variety of Chinese cuisine, Italy's wealth of world-class historical and cultural sites made the trip absolutely worthwhile.

Given another chance, I would definitely return to Italy. And now I am looking forward to my next adventure somewhere else in Europe!
